Agra Fort
Description
In 1565, Emperor Akbar commissioned the construction of a magnificent red-sandstone fort on the banks of the River Yamuna, which was later expanded by his grandson Shah Jahan.
A 21.4 m high fortification wall surrounds the semi-circular fortification wall. The fort was built largely for military purposes, and portions of it are still under Indian Army control.
It was turned into a palace by Shah Jahan, and it eventually became his gilded prison for eight years after his son Aurangzeb gained control in 1658.
Sikandra/Akbar’s Tomb
Description
Emperor Akbar erected the red-sandstone and marble mausoleum on the city's western outskirts, which was subsequently finished by his son Jahangir.
Its inside is adorned with fine calligraphy that symbolises the ideals of Din-e-Ilahi, a religious movement founded by Emperor Akbar on the union of predominantly Hinduism and Islam, as well as other religions.
